How to excel in your career and squash self doubt

Do you struggle with self-doubt, questioning whether you have what it takes to pursue that promotion or the next role, to raise your hand and truly contribute at the level you know you are capable of?

Read this blog or watch the video at the bottom to learn about the power of addressing self-doubt in career advancement.

Recognizing Self-Doubt in Your Career

As a leadership coach and career strategist who works with talented women and leaders facing self-doubt in their careers, I understand the impact this can have on your professional development.

It's not uncommon to question whether we can take on new challenges, pursue leadership roles, or raise our hands to contribute at a higher level.

This kind of self-doubt can hinder our progress and limit our potential. Recognizing the presence of self-doubt is the first step in addressing it and creating a pathway to success in our careers.

A Story of Transformation

Throughout my career coaching experiences, I've witnessed incredible transformations as individuals confronted and overcame their self-doubt.

I want to share one relatable and compelling story from one of our dear members. She was a senior manager who had interviewed over 50 times within her company, aspiring to contribute from a Director role, and believed her accent was holding her back.

Through coaching and support, she discovered that her accent and the self-doubt resulting from her belief made her question her ability to communicate effectively.

This realization allowed her to shift her mindset and focus instead on identifying and articulating her unique value proposition, ultimately leading her to interview for future director roles confidently.

Uncovering Limiting Beliefs

Addressing self-doubt requires peeling back the layers of limiting beliefs and fears that hold us back. It's essential to bring these stories and fears to the surface and examine them objectively.

In doing so, we can identify the root causes of our self-doubt and begin to challenge and reframe these beliefs.

By recognizing and understanding the fears of not looking smart enough or the fear of failure, for example, we can gradually dismantle the barriers that have been constraining our potential for growth.

Embracing Your Unique Value Proposition

One of the most powerful tools in overcoming self-doubt is recognizing and embracing our unique value proposition. This involves objectively assessing our contributions to our work and understanding how we uniquely impact our environment.

Focusing on tangible contributions and strengths can build confidence and resilience, enabling us to pursue our career aspirations with a strong sense of self-assurance.

Crafting Compelling Narratives

Crafting compelling stories regarding your qualifications and experiences is crucial in breaking through self-doubt and excelling in interviews or professional situations.

This process involves examining our past achievements, understanding the value we brought to each scenario, and effectively communicating these experiences to showcase our potential.

What does this look like in action? Before an interview, think of challenging situations you overcame related to your interviewing role.

Here's how to prepare your “compelling stories:”

Identify the situation/challenge
What you did about it
The outcome based on your actioins

You can use this framework to create a narrative around leadership, team members, conflict situations, projects, etc. No more staring into the interviewer's eyes like a deer in headlights.

This framework will help you prepare and articulately and succinctly demonstrate your experience and the results you delivered.

Through this process, we can demonstrate our capacity to excel in new roles and contribute meaningfully within our organizations.

Navigating Interviews with Confidence

Navigating interviews confidently is key to overcoming self-doubt and securing career advancements.

By developing strategies to express our value succinctly and clearly, we can effectively communicate our capabilities to potential employers or decision-makers.

Additionally, learning to ensure that our responses are precise and relevant while allowing space for the interviewer to assess our qualifications fully is pivotal in making a lasting impression and compelling case for our candidacy.

What does that mean?

  • Be thorough and brief in your responses.

  • Allow the interviewer to tackle all their questions so that they become “certain” that you can do the job well. If they don’t have that opportunity, they’ll have doubts as they never heard your answers to some of their key questions.

Embracing Fearless Leadership

At its core, conquering self-doubt is about embracing fearless leadership and stepping into our roles with confidence and conviction.

It involves acknowledging that our self-doubt may originate from our beliefs, fears, and assumptions and actively working to dismantle these barriers.

By allowing our innate abilities to shine forth, we not only fulfill our potential but also contribute meaningfully to the collective success of our teams and organizations.

Remember the story I shared earlier? By applying these strategies, she crushed her next director interview!

She's building, coaching, and mentoring a high-performing team, navigating building relationships and influence among her peers and leadership team, and giving her potential a shot.

She would have missed it had she not stepped out of her comfort zone and sought out our support through our leadership training for women, the Fearless Leadership Mastermind.

Like her, you and I can overcome the limitations hindering our progress. I'm not excluded from those. "New level, new devil," as my mentor often says.
