Today, we delve into leadership quality #13: How to build relationships and meet all your human needs at the same time.

Building relationships is essential.

Building relationships in business and life is fundamental to growing your career from an organizational level and personal growth and self-fulfillment.

I don't know anyone who considers themselves a successful professional who has not developed deep connections and relationships in the workplace. It's nearly impossible to be a successful person and not have built relationships around you.

Off the bat, what can sometimes get in the way of building relationships is a subconscious fear of not wanting to be seen or for people to know our "business." When this dynamic is at play, we tend to keep to ourselves, and we isolate or retreat in the process. If you happen to be feeling lonely or isolated during this chapter of your career or not welcomed, I invite you to ask yourself these questions.

How have I isolated myself?

How have I kept up my guard?

I've had conversations with people who have intentionally not built relationships at work beyond the professional niceties one would share with a colleague. I've learned that in some cases, this behavior stems from the fear of being judged.

If you are now facing a situation where you don't have the types of relationships you wish you had, consider how much of that perhaps has to do with an unconscious decision to keep to yourself.

Today, as your coach, I invite you to explore, "What would it look like if I were to open up to people who seem open to me?" Not everybody is going to be receptive and open to you. But in life, we can approach people in our circles who seem to have an open mind, be kind, don't seem to have an agenda, and who we would want to befriend, even though we're adults. Some of us may say, "I don't need another friend. I already have friends." In my opinion, that can be an excuse to keep ourselves small and in hiding.

Regardless of your current situation, please consider the value of opening up and letting people in your life professionally. That means that you're truly putting yourself out there, you're authentic, and letting others into your world.

Meeting Your Human Needs through Relationships

Building relationships in your personal life and your professional life is going to give you the most fulfillment. Those relationships and interactions provide a healthy vehicle to meet our human needs for certainty, variety, significance, and connection.

In addition, when we build relationships, we are meeting our need for learning and growing. It is while in a relationship that we grow and contribute the most. It's tough for me to contribute to you unless I put myself out there, as I am doing now.

Personally and vulnerably, I must share that I had to let go of the fear of judgment to put myself out there. I couldn't share my insights and golden nuggets with you from my 30 years of experience and my expertise as a leadership coach, career strategist, transformational speaker, and author if I didn't set aside the fact that some people may judge me.

Ultimately, it is inconsequential to me and my work whether people judge me. Instead, I focus on my contributions and being of service to the people around me, helping my clients, potential clients, my community of leaders, my network to grow and support them any way that I can. That sense of contribution allows me not to worry or focus on what people may or may not say or think about me.

Bringing It All Together

Notice if you've been holding back from building relationships out of fear of people knowing your business, being judged, or simply not wanting to share your life with colleagues.

Know that you always get to choose what you share. I invite you to build healthy, professional, supportive relationships with a spirit of collaboration and contribution. Focus on how you will be helping others with whom you interact.
