Quality #7: How to manage change and transformation during difficult times

In this article, we continue to work our way through the list of 21 qualities leaders must possess today to lead during times of uncertainty and complexity.

The 21 qualities showcased in my new book, Healing Leadership: How to Lead, Love, and Thrive in Business and Life, published in April 2021.

In previous blogs, we discussed the first six qualities--we invite you to check them out. Healing and empowering leaders:

  • Communicate powerfully, including listening.

  • Show empathy and high emotional intelligence.

  • Value and empower their team.

  • Set the vision.

  • Are flexible

  • Are Transparent

A Healing Leader Manages Change & Transformation

Every organization that I've been a part of has experienced change repeatedly. When we are going through periods of high demand, it requires you as the leader to manage the change and transformation in a constructive way for your team and your company.

As a leader, when we can constructively manage change and transformation, we have a tool that gives the people around us certainty.

So. how do we manage change and transformation in the middle of chaos?

I want to share this skill with you of managing change and transformation so that when you're facing it in your work environment or at home, you leverage these tools to hold on to, go inward, and figure out how that change will impact you and your team.

Practice Self-Leadership

The number one tool that I use and teach my clients who are in my leadership programs is to lead yourself, so when you see that change is coming, you can go inward and see how that change will impact you as a leader. The change always begins within.

Then, once you check in with yourself, manage your emotions about it, and begin to address it externally.

If we're able to see the change coming, and we're able to be in touch with what is happening in the marketplace, with the trends that are happening, we can predict many of the changes.

Communicate the Impact of the Change

Change shakes people to their core. During this time, what people need most is certainty.

You help them when you communicate how the change will impact your team and the people involved. Their #1 concern is how does the change affects them personally. Then, how does the change alter their environment.

Communicate the impact to the stakeholders involved and how the transformation will affect the organization and the plan or strategy to help everyone assimilate.

We've heard companies go through change and transformation, and the employees are pleased with how they handle it. However, often, we hear the opposite--we listen to nightmares stories about how poorly the leadership team dealt with the transformation.

Bringing It All Together

To manage change, start with yourself, then extend it outward and communicate powerfully so that the people around you get the certainty they need to know how to navigate the change successfully.

Sometimes, the change is not good news for the talent--we may need to downsize team members or eliminate entire departments, which could be frustrating and devastating for people.

As a leader, you can support your talent by helping them give that change an empowering meaning and anchoring on their strengths to withstand and even thrive through the transition, with a constructive and positive intention.

If you already "know" these concepts, this is a reminder to begin "living" them.
