[Vlog] How these powerful fears can be holding you back in life

Are you intimidated when you're getting started with something new?


Maybe you are in a position where you are ready for your next level, but you are afraid that you don't know everything yet.


The leaders I coach and support through my Fearless Leadership Mastermind--my proven program to help talented female leaders retool with new leadership skills to advance to senior roles--face these common fears. Which of these fears can you relate to most? It may be more than one.

Most recently, I have experienced my own fears. Here's a quick story about when I became a faculty member at McKinsey&Company. My role is to be a member of the team of leadership coaches for the Latino Hispanic Executive Leadership Program.


I'm so proud to be part of the movement and to support Hispanics that are in leadership so they can continue to ascend to the ranks and contribute to the highest level possible and reach their full potential.


Before I took on this role, I had never been a leadership coach for a program like this. I had to learn how the process works, the pieces of the whole process, and how I could add the most value along the way.


Of course, there's always hesitation. Am I going to get all the stuff that I need to do? How is it going to be? There's always the question of not knowing how it will end up.


How can you take chances and start new things, even when you don't know 100% how things will turn out?


Taking those chances is essential because as we go into a new area that we're unfamiliar with, and as we lean into our confidence in our abilities, it allows us to become more of who we are.


It also allows others to see us for who we really are. But that starts with so much courage by us showing up for ourselves first and having what I call having a critical mass of confidence that allows you to say yes.


If you're struggling because you don't have a critical mass of confidence, what would support you in building that confidence?

Think about a time when you were in a similar position, not knowing if you could do something, and you learned it, and you were able to succeed. If you didn't quite succeed, you learn to persist, which is what our growth mindset allows us to do. We Learn from the situation, and instead of chalking it up to being a failure, we chalk it up to what I learned from that experience.


If you are struggling with saying yes, with taking a chance, whether it's work-related or in your personal life, perhaps this message is for you that it's time to take a chance.


I now feel like this was one of the best things I could have said yes to and that I'm so proud to be part of this movement. And I already see the impact I'm having on the leaders I'm helping to coach through the McKenzie Leadership Program. I am here to say you can do it too.
