3 Easy ways to gain momentum and confidence in your career today

What does it mean to gain momentum and flow?

In this article, we share 3 easy ways to gain momentum and confidence in your career today.

I want to address the topic of momentum because even when you know what you want to do or decide what you want to create over the next 12 months, what can get in the way of you making progress is not having momentum. Lack of flow also looks like you're not taking the next step to accomplish what you want to achieve.

What can you do if you feel stuck, and how can you move forward?

Not having momentum can show up in different ways.

As a coach and career strategist supporting my clients, what I've learned that gets in the way of momentum and flow is often a lack of confidence, confidence in your abilities, in whether the outcome will be what you want it to be, for example-. And when that's the case, clients experience self-doubt, which is the opposite of confidence. It's a belief that you don't have what it takes or lack a specific skill set to do what it takes.

Step 1: Ask yourself, why is this goal important to me?

I invite you to do the following if you lack confidence and have self-doubt about the next steps you need to take. To gain confidence and momentum, ask yourself, why is this goal important to me?

I'll give you an example.

When working on Fearless Women At Work, I had never written a book before. So I had low confidence about how to do it. But I knew I had a strong desire to put it out there. I also clarified why writing a book was meaningful to me--to share my voice and experiences and help other leaders build successful careers with more ease and flow. Even though I didn't have the confidence yet, I leaned on why writing this book was significant to me--I deepened my purpose for doing it.

Lean on your why and purpose to gain the momentum to pursue the goals you want to achieve.

Step 2: Feel into the emotions of what it will feel when I accomplish that goal or what it would feel like if I don't.

These emotions will give you the fuel to be creative and gain the resources and skills you need to go for it.

Emotions generate a powerful energy that can take you down or boost your drive to get moving. As you explore these emotions, you'll understand the value you give your goals.

I knew that publishing my first book would feel empowering and aligned with my value for contribution. It would also symbolize the transition from my corporate role to running a new business and support my goals to speak on stage. If I didn't go for it and succeed, I would feel that I was not doing my best and like I had given up on my dream--that was not very inspiring and subsequently, writing my book became non-optional. I wanted to do it.

Step 3: Get creative and look for resources that support your growth goals.

In my example, how did I approach it to gain more confidence and write my first #1 bestselling book, Fearless Women At Work?

I started looking around to find who could help me, teach me how, and show me how to write a book. I discovered my book coach, who taught me her framework and shared resources to edit and publish the book.

From our engagements, I gained confidence by identifying the exact steps I needed to take to write and publish the book. My coach and support team saved me many hours of potentially wasted effort and frustrations and helped me get my message out there for my audience to advance and grow in their careers.

Since the book's launch in 2017, it has impacted thousands of readers. The book is the foundation for my online leadership development program, the Fearless Leadership Mastermind, which has successfully helped high-potential, high-performing female leaders gain critical leadership skills to grow and advance into senior leadership roles. They deepen their network, advocacy, and impact in only six months to thrive in their organizations with a sense of shared purpose and belonging.

Without gaining the momentum and flow I needed to publish Fearless Women At Work, I would not have created these outcomes. That's the value of these three steps--and how they can support you.
