How Being Vulnerable Led Me to a Career and Life by Design

What are you willing to do in your career to support your loved ones?

What are you willing to do to reach your full potential?

As caretakers, we have quite the responsibility to not only care for ourselves but also protect the future of our children and loved ones.

Our careers often impact our lifestyles, the amount of time that we spend with our children and loved ones, the impact we have, and the level of meaning and fulfillment we derive from our jobs.

As a divorced mom and professional woman, I support myself 100% and my son. My financial and emotional well-being is mine to own. With these high stakes, career success is not a SHOULD, it's a MUST.

In life, we always get our "MUSTs" not our "SHOULDs"

(as one of my mentors, Tony Robbins, says)

Three years ago, when a successful corporate career ended, I set out to reinvent myself and design my new job and life. The driver was an intense desire to work closer to my son, who was nine years old at the time, to serve on a whole new level, and to tap into my full potential and improve the quality of my life and the lives of others.

But my corporate career was all I knew before then. That's where I spent over 25 years—in financial services and technology in very competitive work environments and 20 of those years as a leader. All four of my degrees were related to technology and business—computer science, business administration, information systems, economics.

When I started my own business, retooling was a MUST. I knew that figuring out how to make my business work, ASAP, was also a MUST—I didn't have five to ten years to figure it out. My son's well- being and mine depended on it.

And retool I did. To succeed as a business owner, I sought out the best. I learned from seasoned experts and authority figures like Tony Robbins, Fabienne Fredrickson, Madhu Maron, Richard Michaels, Steve Harrison, and his team of coaches. I coached with Rob Vitelli, Stacey Martino, Anne-Marie Duchene, Susan Lee, to name a few, and many other coaches and mentors who taught me in less than 12 months what took them decades to figure out.

I became a certified international executive coach, motivational speaker, career strategist, and #1 best-selling author of Fearless Women at Work. These marketable skills were the culmination of extracting my Why, my superpowers, what I'm great at, what I love, and the value I can offer my clients with 100% certainty to earn a living doing it.

The level of freedom, purpose, and impact I now enjoy is like none I've experienced from my career and life.

On the family front, I've designed my work and life to afford me the freedom to spend time with my son and manage my family activities without feeling guilt or regret.

I still work as hard as I ever did, maybe even harder, and my reward is that I get to work from home most of the time and no longer endure a grueling 3+ hours a day commute. On my parenting days, I drop my son off at school and pick him up. Travel and work obligations revolve around my family, with rare exceptions.

On the purpose and impact front, I serve my clients, individuals, and corporations, to the best of my abilities by developing leaders at all levels of the organization. And I speak at employee resource groups, conferences, summits, retreats, and facilitate leadership development training internationally.

Since starting my business, I have successfully facilitated leadership training and coaching programs for global and Fortune 500 companies and delivered keynotes impacting large audiences around the world.

After working together, my clients earn more money, get promoted, integrate their work and life with grace and flow, gain a new level of confidence and self-worth, and learn the tools and strategies to communicate, build rapport, lead, engage, and influence their teams. They perform at a whole new level and drive their teams to higher performance and find more meaning and purpose in their work.

On a personal level, I feel unstoppable and more energized and passionate about today and the future than I ever did. My potential rests in my hands, and only I can stop myself from creating what I most desire. Today, my Why is to enjoy life to the fullest while populating the world with great leaders. I want to tap into my full potential and help my son and my clients tap into theirs.

This new life and reality didn't "happen" because I'm "lucky." It happened because I was intentional about creating it—because I believe in me and my abilities. And because I knew my limitations and asked for help—therein lies my vulnerability and simultaneously my strength.

What allowed me to take all this action was a high level of CONFIDENCE. I took all my chips and placed a bet on "Ginny."

Where did my uber confidence come from?

It came from doing the "inner work" to understand my unique value and getting crystal clear on what is meaningful in my life—coming from within me, not outside, or what I think others want me to do.

My vulnerability, combined with an honest reality check, helped me acknowledge that I had real and self-induced, fictitious limitations and gaps to fill and that I had reached the end of my skill set as a "business owner."

I faced my fears and got to the source, reclaiming my potential and self-worth to take constructive action toward my business goals.

I knew my expertise as a leader, and with a new set of coaching skills and tools in my tool belt, I set out to support other leaders to identify their strengths, limitations, and how to fill those gaps to grow to their next level and achieve their goals, and their full potential.

There's no way that I would have accomplished all that I have since I started my business if I were doing this alone.

And the journey continues as I seek the support that I need every time I hit a new level.

The time, energy, and money that I've invested in learning from other experts have transformed my life and career.

Not only have their support expedited my ability to earn an honest and great living doing something I love, but it has also benefited my family and our experiences together. And I have a significant impact on the lives of the clients and the organizations I serve.

As my clients and partners increase their financial, physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being, I increase mine too. We all benefit.

What holds you back?

What often holds us back from doing the "inner work" that leads to outstanding results in business and life are excuses around time: "I don't have time," "there aren't enough hours in the day," "I'll wait until ____ (fill in the blank)."

Or we use excuses around money, not having the conviction and commitment to invest in ourselves now.

When your SHOULDs become MUSTs, you become extraordinarily resourceful and find the way.

I speak from experience and see it over and over with my clients who make it happen and reap their investments exponentially.

What if you were to transform your SHOULDs into MUSTs?

Answer these five questions right now to get clear on what and how you should be spending your precious resources--your time, effort, and money, the remaining on this year and beyond:

  1. What are your MUSTs in your career and personal life today? These are your non-negotiables.

  2. What is it worth to you to get your MUSTs?

  3. How will you retool and expand your skillset to achieve your MUSTs?

  4. What are you willing to do to give yourself and loved ones a better life and tap into your full potential in your career?

  5. And if you had uber CONFIDENCE, what would your career and life by design look like?

After you answer these questions, you will have a concrete vision and areas to focus on what's important to you and pinpoint the components that you can influence in your life.

When you focus on these answers, you'll notice that you're moving the dial in your life—toward your MUSTs.

There's no time like the present—no more excuses. You and your loved ones are worth it. It's time to retool and get to your next level—and your vulnerability and confidence will lead the way.

The year 2020 is around the corner.

Are you ready to say, "I'm putting all my chips on ___!" (fill in the blank with your name).

When you are ready soon, I invite you to take this journey together.

I've seen what my clients accomplish when they realize their unique value and challenges, and together, we envision what is possible for them and create the bridge to get there.
